Vintage and Modern?

Our first dining table was perfect for our growing family.  For years it served as our multipurpose table and was covered in glue, glitter and paint.  Now that our family has grown we  purchased a larger table and our old friend was put in the garage to gather dust.  There she waited for the day she would be restored to her former beauty and sold to a new family.  Click here for pricing information. I was inspired by this beautiful grain sack farmhouse table design by Aimee at The Vintage Estate.  My table is modern in style but I think the grain sack design would work for this table too.  Can furniture be both Vintage and Modern?  Sure, why not? (I just answered a question with a question).

Step by Step, how to refinish a table.

Sand:

I used a palm sander with 60 grit paper to remove the old finish. Then again with 220 sand paper to make a smooth finish.  To remove the dust I first used compressed air and then wiped the wood with mineral spirits.

I removed the legs to make sanding and painting easier.

Paint Legs:

After she was sanded smooth it was time for paint.  I have wanted to make my own chalk paint and I thought this would be a great project to try it on.  After a little research I decided to use this formula.

How to Make Chalk Paint:
2 cups paint
5 TBS of Plaster of Paris
2 TBS of water

I used a baby formula can to mix and store the paint.  It worked great!

I painted the legs and after they were dry I attached them to the table.  I taped off the underside of the table top, that part will be stained. 

Paint Top:

Lay out the design.  To help paint clean lines press the tape firmly onto the table.

 

I used a small foam roller to apply the paint.  To get a clean stripe apply the first coat of paint thinly.

After a few coats I removed the tape while the paint was still wet.  I painted the legs white too.  I lightly sanded the edges of the legs to expose the natural wood.

 

Stain:

After the paint was dry applied MinWax Dark Walnut Stain all over.  Even on top of the the paint!  It gave the paint an aged look.

To stain the top I used a rag to apply 3 coats ( until I was satisfied with the color) letting the stain dry between each application.  I didn't wipe it off.

To stain the legs (working in sections) I used a rag to apply the stain.

I immediately wiped off the stain using a clean rag.

Seal:

I used Minwax Polycrylic Gloss to seal the table.  I like that it dries fast and clear.  I followed the instructions on the can.
