Really, a paint that will stick to
any surface? Does it really work? You mean I don't have to strip paint
or prime first? What is this mystery paint? Chalk paint. I've read
all about it in the "blogosphere". I watched tons of Youtube videos. Now it's time to try CeCe Caldwell's Chalk Paint.

I painted the top CeCe Caldwell's Vermont Slate.
I
lightly sanded the table with a fine grit paper to expose the original
finish in the areas where I wanted a worn appearance. Starting in
sections, I brushed on the Clear Wax first before it could dry I brushed
on the Aging Wax Dark. After 15 min. or so I wiped it off with a lint
free cloth.
The
next day I buffed the wax. I used a scotch pad (scrubber thingy) and
it really started to shine. Then I used a lint free cloth and finished
buffing.
I loved the base of
the table but the top did not meet my expectations. So after many days
of thought..... I taped off the table and spray painted it a glossy
black.
Warning! BAD IDEA! Do not spray paint over chalk paint!

It took 4 weeks
before the spray paint was no longer sticky. Black paint was rubbing
off on everything. What was I going to do? I did nothing for 5
months. I finally got the courage to refinish the top. I stripped the
paint using Formby's . It's not as bad as I thought It would be just
brush on and scrape off.
Be safe and follow the directions on the can!
After
I removed most of the paint I used the palm sander (60 grit) to get a
smooth finish. Then I sanded with a fine (220 grit) paper.
This
time I wanted to stain the top dark brown. Before staining make sure the surface
is dust free by wiping the piece with mineral spirits. I chose a dark
brown stain from Minwax called ebony that I used on this Stool Makeover. I applied three coats of stain. Each time the stain got darker until I got my desired result. I let the stain set over night before I applied the finish. I used Minwax Polycrylic Clear Gloss to seal the top. I followed the instructions on the can and it turned out great.

ReplyDeleteHey Shelly, This was my first time using Chalk Paint. I decided to use CeCe Caldwell's after finding your blog. You do such great work. I was expecting the Vermont Slate to be darker. I used the spray paint after I waxed it. I used Memphis Blue and dark wax to do this piece calliescrafts.blogspot.com/2013/01/singing-blues.html. I am thrilled with the results. Thanks for visiting.

DeleteI was wondering where I could find chalk paint. I did a search for Cece's in my area and the only retailer "close" is about an hour away. Where else should I be able to find chalk paint? I looked at Lowes and all I could find was Chalkboard paint, obviously not it. Also, what is Aging Wax Dark? Is this a normal step in finishing, or is this what gave the table the dark overtones on the green/blue legs? I want to try this! I LOVE the finished product.
