Trash to Treasure

I found this headboard on the curb!  Can you believe someone was throwing it away!  On my drive home I thought only of all the colors I could paint it, so many possibilities.  I remembered that i had a sample of  Silverado by Olympic in the garage.  It's a beautiful greyed lavender.   I was so excited, that as soon as I got home, I tested the color.

Silverado was the perfect color but before I could start to paint it needed to be cleaned.  I took it out in the drive way and hosed it down with water.  I then used Windex an a green scrubby to to get off the grime.  Then I hosed it down again.  Once it was dry, it was time to mix up some chalk paint.  I had great success using my homemade chalk paint recipe on my Vintage and Modern table.  I couldn't wait to use it again.

How to Make Chalk Paint:
2 cups paint
5 TBS of Plaster of Paris
2 TBS of water

I used a baby formula can to mix and store the paint.  It worked great!

My plan is to distress this piece.  I started by painting one coat of Silverado to the whole headboard.  Then after the first coat was dry I painted the edges and areas where I wanted the white to show through.  When the white paint was dry I used a Q-tip to apply Vaseline over the white paint. This will make the paint come off easily when it’s time to distress.  Then I painted a second coat of Silverado to the whole headboard.

After the second coat was dry, I used a sanding block to sand the areas I painted white.  The distressing revealed both white and brown paint adding a rustic charm.

I dusted the headboard with a cloth.  Then I applied 2 coats of Minwax Polycrylic to seal and protect the paint.  Follow the instructions on the can.

Put 'em together and what do you got?  Bippity, Boppity, Boo!

  6. Great headboard, Callie! Can't believe what some people put at the curb. If nothing else you'd think they would donate it. Although, I don't mind finding these things myself. I found two great little dressers that people just threw out and made them over {one for my house and one for my daughter}.
